“Once in a while a truly dynamic and visionary person comes along. Pip Carroll is such a person. I can honestly say that she galvanised my admiration when I first saw her innovative approach to integrating and normalising bicycle riding as a natural and enjoyable part of everyday Melbourne life. Her energy and skill was so refreshing. When asked to Chair the newly formed Board of The Squeaky Wheel I did not hesitate.

’It has been a pleasure to see how much can be achieved with a small number of committed people. The reach of TSW programming has been enormous it leaves a legacy that will not be forgotten and hard to beat. I would like to send a huge thank you to all those who have been involved over the past years including my fellow Board members, Jette Achleitner and of course Pip Carroll.

“The whole point of The Squeaky Wheel was to create change. All of the work we did, the endless spreadsheets, site maps, test rides, timelines, permits, website updates and more - all of the invisible work that goes in to making something seem easy - was designed to achieve one thing. To change people’s minds.

Perhaps it was the change in confidence of a woman who had thought she was too old to learn anything new. Perhaps it was the change in expression on the face of the asylum seeker as he rode his new bike into his new city. Often it was just the subtle change in someone’s opinion on how and why to ride a bike.

We were never about the numbers, or the money or the market share. We set out to change your attitude about bikes. To show you how they are better able to connect us to each other, and to ourselves.

It was for these changes that we worked, and now our work is done. Change of course, is never finished. It carries on without us. As will you, on your bikes, as vehicles for change. Enjoy the ride!”
