The City of Melbourne and Good Wheel

Nothing feels better than getting someone new onto a bike, ask any bike rider who's converted a friend! We get to do this quite a bit at The Squeaky Wheel but it's an extra special satisfaction when it is part of our Good Wheel program.

Good Wheel is a program initiated by the City of Melbourne to help Melbournites from culturally diverse backgrounds access cycling as a safe means of getting around the city. Being new to a city, unfamiliar with local road rules and norms, not having access to a bicycle, and using a second language can all be barriers to the freedom a bicycle brings. Together with AMES, Victoria Police and our program partners, Good Cycles, we've been training new locals on donated bicycles in a friendly and supportive environment.

Not only does each graduate of the program leave with a bicycle and a helmet generously donated by Nutcase Australia, they leave with the skills to get around safely on it and a heap of new bicycling buddies! Take a look at this short film the City of Melbourne made about the Good Wheel program.
