Dare to Ride
We've teamed up with Treadlie Magazine to stage a Pushy Women ride in support of the Afghan Women’s Cycling Team.
If the biggest problem you have jumping on your bike is matching your scarf to your panniers, spare a thought for the women of Afghanistan for whom, whether they want to ride to the shops or ride to win, cultural norms make it almost impossible.
The Afghan Women’s Cycling Team is changing that with the support of the Mountain2Mountain foundation and Liv/Giant. A team of determined Afghan women are pedalling a revolution and have secured an invitation to compete at the Asian Games in South Korea in September.
And while their training may be rigorous, ours certainly isn’t! We’ll start off with coffee, and finish with cake. In between there will be a relaxed meandering ride through Melbourne’s inner-north with guest speakers and plenty of time to stop and chat. Men and women from all over the globe will be riding in the Global Solidarity Ride, we’ll be joining them and you can too!
Along the way, Catherine Deveny, the bicycling brains behind Pushy Women will speak about her experience in Afghanistan and the obstacles women face there while champion cyclist and champion doctor, Bridie O’Donnell will talk about the many inequalities that still face Western women who choose to compete as cyclists.
There’ll be coffee, cakes, velodromes, heels, short films and a warm inner glow! We’ll be meeting and leaving from St Ali North where VeloCycles will look your bike over before we depart while you enjoy one of St Ali’s finest roast.
Dare to Ride is on Saturday August 30th. We meet up at St Ali North at 1:30 for a 2pm departure. Our afternoon will finish with cake and refreshments around 5pm.
