Pushy Women Excursion with Charlie Farren

When the spirits are low, when the day appears dark, when work becomes monotonous, when hope hardly seems worth having, just mount a bicycle and go out for a spin down the road, without thought on anything but the ride you are taking.
— Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (author of Sherlock Holmes), 1896 Scientific American Magazine

Charlie Farren is one of Australia's longest serving and most interesting bicycle advocates. Not only is she the co-owner of one of the largest vintage bicycle collections in the WORLD, she has also climbed the alps (on a bike of course!), ridden with the blind and frocked up splendidly on Tweed Rides with the Melbourne Vintage Bicycle club.

An inveterate traveler Charlie has travelled the world by bicycle, from touring in the high Himalayas to long distance Penny Farthing rides. Bicycles play a vital role in her life - it’s a life-long love affair that has never waned. Born in London, she has had various occupations from secretary to teacher to studio potter, Bicycle Event organizer with a finger in virtually every bicycle pie that Australia has to offer. She has unbounded energy and enthusiasm for life , especially life with a bicycle.

Charlie is also a proud Melbournian and this tour will follow one of her favourite routes with a story (or two) to tell at each stop. Departing from Gasworks in Port Melbourne, taking in Station Pier, Princes Pier, Westgate Park and then hopping aboard the Punt for a ride to Scienceworks, before heading back across the water along the beach, wind streaming through our (helmeted) hair.

Part performance, part observance, no parts endurance, Pushy Women Rides bring together women in a unique setting to consider what it means to be a woman on wheels.

Cost: $15

Book your place online, in person at any of City of Port Phillip’s Town Hall Cashier & Enquiries desk or by phone on 9209 6274.

She Spoke - Southside Women on Wheels - Three months of rides, workshops and special events celebrating women on bikes is presented by the City of Port Phillip.

“When the spirits are low, when the day appears dark, when work becomes monotonous, when hope hardly seems worth having, just mount a bicycle and go out for a spin down the road, without thought on anything but the ride you are taking.”

Cost: $15
