2012 Bikefest

After the smashing debut of Bikefest 2010, we decided to shift from the torrential rain and pesky riding conditions of late spring, to the glorious sun and freewheelin feeling of late summer, skipping a calendar year to make the change. The 2012 Bikefest outgrew a single venue, and took up residence in community and cultural activities and institutions all over town. We resolved to preach to the converted no longer, and set out into the mainstream culture to find these elusive 'interested but concerned' bike riders-to-be.

We established the Bikefest Treadlie Market at the Sustainable Living Festival, presented Chasing Rainbows as part of the 2012 Track World Championships, continued the Bike Runway, delivered the My Bike Project, had a delightful time at the Village Picnic, initiated the Move Mindfully in Melbourne Program, debuted the Wheelie Workshop, continued Better by Bike and despite moving to February to avoid the rain, we made a pretty good time of it at our Opening Night Party, amongst other things... The Squeaky Wheel was the culmination of 10 years of grass roots bicycle advocacy and event programming lead by Pip Carroll. The Company was formally established in 2013 as a not for profit entity, but before then Pip and the core team of staff had worked with an extensive network of volunteers and partners to stage the Melbourne Bicycle Film Festival and Melbourne Bikefest. <\/p>
Melbourne Bikefest was staged from 2010 to 2013, bringing together many thousands of people from all over Australia in a celebration of bikes in everyday life. The festival was made up of events produced and delivered by The Squeaky Wheel, but also featured contributions from dozens of community organisations, individuals, sponsors and friends, a true collective effort. Our motivation for staging the festival was to position bike riding as integral to the civic experience, integrating food, fashion, art, design, music, discussions and ideas, and also, but not only, sport and recreation.
