You don't have to be related to appreciate the special bonds of sisterhood. Every woman has a woman in their life that is privy to our deepest desires, the first to hear good (and bad!) news, someone who knows just when we need to be parked on the couch with a cup of tea, packet of tim tams and the remote control.

This Sunday we are calling on all sisters to call upon their sisters to spend an afternoon out on the treadlie. Our Mother/Daughter/Sisterhood ride is curated especially to celebrate the bonds between women, and will leave you even more appreciative of that special woman in your life, or perhaps introduce a new one!

The day begins at Gasworks Arts Park (site of the recent Pushy Women South extravaganza) and takes in stops at the Port Phillip Mussel Festival, St Ali Cafe (with a free coffee), a stop in the park learning some helmet ready hairstyles from Braiding with Theresa and finishing up with a beach cruise and some sparkling (provided) to reflect the sparkle in each others eyes.

Mussels, sparkling, coffee and playing with our hair. Oh yes.

Who needs friends when you've got sisters?

If you have been hiding under a rock, you may not know that the National Gallery of Victoria is holding a GIGANTIC exhibition of EVERYTHING called Melbourne Now.

Well, not quite EVERYTHING, but a lot. We are very pleased to be a part of it thanks to our friends at The Office For Good Design, who have programmed 3 Pushbike Excursions under the name Roll Your Eyes: Melbourne NOW by Bike.

Over three Saturdays in January, we will be leading a FREE BICYCLE TOUR tour hosted by a Melbourne creative, and discovering hidden parts of Melbourne through their eyes and on our bikes.

Here’s the rundown:

Saturday 11 January
2-4pm
Roll Your Eyes: Melbourne Now by Bike – Beci Orpin
BOOK YOUR PLACE

Beci Orpin is a designer-illustrator based in Melbourne. When she is not working, Beci likes riding her bike, gardening, digging in second hand stores and hanging out with her two sons Tyke and Ari, and partner Raph.

Saturday 18 January
2-4pm
Roll Your Eyes: Melbourne Now by Bike – Room 11
BOOK YOUR PLACE

Room11 Architects was seeded in the soils of friendship. Their common preoccupations with installation art, graphic design, theatre, street art, European modernism and Australian bush architecture established ‘diverse collaboration’ as the preferred modus operandi from the outset.

Saturday 25 January
2-4pm
Roll Your Eyes: Melbourne Now by Bike – Room 11
BOOK YOUR PLACE

Kate Stokes and Haslett Grounds are a design duo working across the fields of furniture, interior, and graphic design. Their design philosophy is built around the Swedish word ‘lagom’, translating roughly to ‘not too much, and not too little’.

Don’t forget to bring your helmet, sunscreen and some water.

All rides meet at the The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Federation Square Ground Level Information Desk
See you for the ride!

"addressLine1": "", "addressLine2": "
"

/blog/roll-your-eyes-melbourne-now-by-bike
https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/529fffe9e4b0ee6848ff742b/1391310570036-ZRWDYC4KS28C75CCS9RN/MelbourneNowRide.jpg
image/jpeg

950x550
text" },
[ "Pushy Women", "excursions"
Rides & Tours

Sunday 8 December, 2-4.30pm

Departing from St Ali North

BOOK YOUR PLACE

What a way to end the year! Taking a two wheeled tour with a bunch of awesome ladies lead by the gorgeous, glorious and notorious CLEMENTINE FORD. The first three Pushy Women Excursions, presented in partnership with Catherine Deveny have proved to be an absolute CRACKER of a time. So if you need a break from the silly season before it even gets started, we have a VERY LIMITED number of places left in this Sunday’s excursion.

As usual, we will start with a free coffee and a tune up care of St Ali North andVelo Cycles, and ride off into the summery afternoon to visit some of Clementine’s favourite people and places. NOTE TO WARDROBE, one of the stops will involve a very special photo opportunity for you and your treadlie, so don’t let it go to waste…We’ll be visiting houses, flea markets and getting serenaded with our own personal musical performance. The ride will finish up in Brunswick in everyone’s favourite beer garden at The Brunswick Green.

So what can we expect from our gracious host on the day? Here’s a snippet of Clementine’s bicycle story:

When did you first start riding a bike?
I can’t remember ever not being able to ride a bike, so I must have started pretty

early! I stopped riding in my teens because we lived at the top of a big hill and I ended up just walking everywhere. But I re-embraced the two wheels when I was at university and have never looked back!

What do you like best about bike riding?
I love the freedom having a bike gives you. You can literally go anywhere on it. It’s very liberating. And there’s nothing better than going for a ride on a beautiful spring night when the scent of jasmine hangs heavy in the air. Everything feels possible then.

How had riding a bike changed your life?
I can’t really pinpoint anything, but I think bike riding gives you a confidence specific to being able to get on a bike and just go. So many people who don’t ride think that they can’t, or they’re afraid. So there’s a fearlessness to riding. I feel like I’m part of a long line of women who have bucked authority. Obviously now there’s nothing strange about a woman riding a bike; but it was a rebellious thing for women to do in the beginning. Being a part of that tradition is very satisfying.

Sunday 24 November, 2-4.30pm
Departing from St Ali North
BOOK YOUR PLACE

You may have seen a play she wrote, you may have read her writing in The Guardian, but THIS SUNDAY 24 November you can join her on a two wheeled jaunt around Melbourne’s inner north, for the third instalment of our Pushy Women series, featuring speaker, teacher and MC, theatremaker, novelist, and barbarian Van Badham.

We spoke to Van about what bike riding means to her: “I started riding a bike when I was 5. It was a green Malvern Star and my parents assured me it was the greatest bicycle ever. For some reason, the front fork had to be replaced and the replacement was this pineapple colour. It made my bike even cooler. My bike became my closest companion for years: on camping holidays on the Hawkesbury River, I used to ride the bike for miles and miles through forests and orchards, past mountains and to distant and spectacular locations. It was freedom.”

“It’s the agency that the bike gives you that is what I like most about riding. As a girl, I think cycling really connected me to the possibility that I could – and should – determine my own direction, and have the power at my disposal to go where I wanted to and see things for myself. 40 countries and a big life later, I think I do owe my belief that adventure is always possible to the bike. I rode a hire over the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco down to Sausalito when I was 27 and it was the most golden day of my life.” This is Pushy Woman after our own hearts! Couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

So what’s on Van’s Pushy Women Excursion? Well, we’ll start out at our usual spot, the sunny side of St Ali North, with a free coffee and a tune up for your bicycle care of Velo Cycles. If you arrive early, you can take a spin on a Gazelle Electric bike from Velo Electric and Folding (perhaps you want to go all the way?). Departing this treadlie nirvana, Van will lead us on a journey into her past, with a story to tell at every stop. Prepare for cake at Babka, ice-cream at Trampoline, discount designer frills at Alannah Hill, a spot of education at Trades Hall rounded out with a tipple at the Standard Hotel.

Tickets are limited so BOOK YOUR PLACE

Sunday 10 November, 2-4.30pm
Departing from St Ali North
BOOK YOUR PLACE

Hey Ladies! YEAH? Hey fellas YEAH? Can you hear me? YEAH. Ok then. I’ll stop shouting. Forgive us, we are excited that our second Pushy Women Excursion is just days away, happening THIS SUNDAY 10 November featuring the very funny Geraldine Hickey.

Geraldine will be leading us on a Lonely Hearts tour de wheels. Quite possibly the only way time you will ever do couple stuff with lots of people even if you arrive alone. Sounds weird? – we HOPE SO. The Pushy Women Excursions are a relaxed day out of riding, designed to give you a warm glow about riding a bike and being with other people, in this case, women (but guys are welcome too!)

Sunday’s ride will start out at our gracious hosts, St Ali North with a free coffee and bicycle tune up from Velo Cycles. There is 10km of riding planned, but it will be at a relaxed and sociable pace, so you needn’t worry about working up a sweat!

Along the way Geraldine will lead us on her lonely hearts tour of the inner north, taking in an ice cream shop, the Edinburgh Gardens, Arts Projects Australia, High St Northcote and winding up at the Abbotsford Convent. Along the way she will no doubt regale us with humorous insights and recollections of things past.

If you haven’t heard of Geraldine, a word from her bio ….’a local comedian with an unselfconscious charm and a superb skill for finding the funny in true stories. She is very excited about coming on board with the Pushy Women Excursion project basically because she’s just happy to have a reason to be out of the house, and having spent her child hood cruising the streets on her Apollo 13 the chance of recapturing those memories is one of the best reasons to be out of the house.’

What more need we say?

Let’s get out of the house together, THIS SUNDAY for our second PUSHY WOMEN EXCURSION.

Sunday 27 October, 2-4.30pm
Departing from St Ali North
BOOK YOUR PLACE

We are pleased as punch to be kicking off our inaugural Pushy Women Excursions series with writer, thinker, organiser and all round wonder woman Karen Pickering. One of our most prolific contemporary commentators on feminist issues, Karen will be sharing some of her insights and Northside highlights with us (and YOU!) on two wheels. “Riding a bike makes me so happy, and connects with my feminism so intuitively, that I wanted to share that excitement with people.”

This ride is suitable for anyone with basic riding ability. Perhaps you haven’t been out on the bike in a while or aren’t confident riding in traffic? Our route includes lots of flat terrain and you will experience the safety of riding in a small group.

Karen says, “When I first started riding, I found it really daunting. My bike is a cruiser, it’s like that because I like riding slowly everywhere. I thought it would be good to ease people into it. Using riding for ordinary things, like going to the shop, so it’s not so much of a mission.”

We couldn’t agree more! The idea behind the Pushy Women excursions is to provide women (and men if they would like to come) a safe and uncompetitive environment in which to get out a bike. No need to sweat or dress for exercise, just come as you are (or however you would like to dress for a Sunday afternoon out with the ladies!) Karen again; “I’m super unfit, I ride in dresses, so I thought it would be cruisy, easy and won’t be difficult or pushing anyone’s physical fitness.”

The rides are lead by female Austcycle trained guides (i.e. The Squeaky Wheel staff), so if you have any concerns we are there to help, but the riding will be slow, social and interspersed with stops selected by Karen to give you insight in to her life, her work and her experiences on two wheels.

Beginning at St Ali North on Nicholson St (with a free coffee and tune-up thanks to Velo Cycles) the ride will finish up at a pub in Collingwood within 2.5 hours (so you can enjoy a refreshing post-endorphin brew!) Participants will be briefed on the ride route and other destinations at the start of the ride. All riders will be covered by Cycling Australia insurance, provided via Cycling Victoria through their Breeze Program.

So come and join Karen and her Schwinn Jenny (called Jenny) for a great day out on the bike.
